4 Months Old!

Wow, I say it every time any of my children reaches a milestone or a birthday, and I will continue to say it for the rest of my life, I'm sure.

Where does the time go?!

Today my little baby Addison (a.k.a. AddisOn (long O sound), Addi Paddi, Addi Paddi Cakes, Paddi Cakes, Addi Paddi Poo, Paddi Poo) is 4 months old. She is a DELIGHT as a baby and I couldn't be more grateful for her in our home.

She has gotten to the age where a schedule is actually forming - HOORAY! While that is an awesome thing to have, at the same time it means that she doesn't want to be cuddled, snuggled or to just lay in my arms all day. She wants to move and shake and play and experience the world.

Here is a little video for your view pleasure. She is growing like a weed! And please just pretend that my voice is super awesome and not at all annoying.

Sibling Rivalry? No, not my kids.

In my short time as a mother - and before - I have foolishly watched other people's children and wrongfully judged, thinking my kids were never going to act that way, were kinder, better behaved etc., you get the point.

I really shouldn't have been so naive.

My older sister has two girls of her own (and a boy, but we're just talking about the oldest two kids here) that are each about a year older than mine.  My older girls are going to be 5 and 3 next month, and hers just turned 6 and 4.  Point being is that I should have been watching her girls more as a warning of what was to come from my own children.

She has been warning me about her girls new tactics at sibling rivalry and I have witnessed some of it first hand.  I kept thinking that my girls (at least Brielle) were so mild that I would NEVER encounter such things.

I was wrong.

In my family, as well as my husband's family, where there are two girls next to each other in birth order it would seem that the younger one is the "ring leader" and the older one is quieter and patient.  If you know me and my little sister you would understand what I mean.  I am still in therapy (with my chocolate stash) over that time of my childhood.

This would lead me to believe that I hadn't experienced much sibling rivalry between my kids because Claire was just too young to initiate it.  Now, however, Claire has come in to that age and she does nothing but climb on Brielle, follow Brielle, pull on Brielle's shirt to drag her where she wants her to go.  The other day Brielle had the audacity to trip and bump in to Claire.  Claire turned around, shoved Brielle and yelled, "Hey!  Don't hit me Brielle!"  Poor Brielle was dumbfounded.  (Yes, we did step in and let Claire know she can't push.)

I had started to worry that we were going to need to teach Brielle how to "fight back" or at least stick up for herself because I didn't want her to be constantly tortured by her younger sister...because I have been there and done that...so sad, I know.

But then Brielle - in her own way - DID retaliate.

She has figured out that while Claire goes for the physical torture - i.e. climbing on Brielle, trying to ride her, dragging her around, hugging her relentlessly - she can get to her with mind games.  Brielle will just say things to Claire like, "HA!  I took your (imaginary) Batman and put it on the ceiling!  Now you can't get it!"  This causes Claire to fall apart in a fit of hysterics over her beloved Batman.  I don't know why Claire can't realize that the "Batman" on the ceiling is non-existent and she could just as easily pretend to get him down.  But for now, Brielle seems to feel as though she still has the upper hand.

So, I guess I should thank my older sister for the warning she laid before me...even if I did ignore it and believe, stupidly, that my kids would never be anything but best friends.

It has me curious - and a little worried - about how Addison is going to fit in to the mix.

Happy Birthday ME!!

Yesterday was my birthday - HAPPY BIRTHDAY ME!

I wish I could say I don't feel any different than last year...but I would be lying.  This has been a LONG year (it went quickly, but it was jam packed with STUFF) and I am convinced that the light hairs on my head are just blonde and that my hair is trying to go back to its original color of my childhood.  If you tell me otherwise, I will flick you in the forehead. (I'm talking to you EMILY.)

Marty is no fool and knew the day had monumental potential for an emotional breakdown due to the fact that I - for the first time in my life - was not "home" for my birthday.  So, I woke up to about 50 balloons all over the family room floor, a WAY cute note, a black cat stuffed animal (it has significant meaning to us) and a gift.  Marty had stayed up late the night before blowing all the balloons up...by mouth.  He said he got super light headed and thought he may die, but was willing to die to give me a happy birthday.  What a good man he is.  I couldn't help but ask him why he didn't get one of those little pump things for the balloons...his response: "They make those?" Gosh I love that man.  He then made me a cheesecake (the Jello no-bake variety...but hey, my husband used the electric hand mixer!) and let me choose our menu for the day.

(Mmm...Olive Garden for dinner...)

Unfortunately our children decided to partially derail the day by being sick.  Claire had bronchitis last week and while she has been on antibiotics, she is still a bit grumpy.  Brielle has a cold, but it hasn't gotten worse.  But when Addison started coughing, I was really worried.  So I spent a good portion of the day at urgent care with her.  They did a chest x-ray because they heard some "rattling" in her lungs.  Turns out my little baby has bronchitis too.  They put her on some medicine and she seems to be improving - thankfully - but we'll have to keep a close eye on her.

(Mmm...Olive Garden for dinner...at home in a takeout box.)

So, although there were parts of the day that weren't the most exciting, I felt loved and special and am so grateful for my wonderful husband who understands and is willing to pick up the slack while we're away from family.

P.S. Thank you to all the family and friends for the cards and kind words!  It meant a lot to me!

Safety is key

We have been gently trying to teach our children that the world is not always safe.  We try not to scare them by using specific examples, we just try to make sure they know that they need to be careful wherever they are.   You know, look both ways before crossing the street, don't leave our yard, don't talk to strangers, don't kick people in the shins at the store...you know, the typical things you try to teach young children.

Apparently Claire took us a little too literally.

You never know when story time may take a dangerous turn.
